Holy catfish, Batman! This gadget girl thinks she's in love. I get a daily email newsletter that talks about cool products/things to do, and they highlighted these funky glasses. I WANT them! These Myvu glasses plug into your video-based player or game system. Video eye wear. You put glasses on and see video -- anywhere! Ear buds add the sound. Have I moved to the land of The Jetsons?? My newsletter suggested wearing them while at a salon. Let's you tune out while your stylist does his/her magic.

The ultimate veg-out. Count me in. Maybe at the dentist, too.

House closing

So, dear readers, my house is finally under contract. Cue the marching bands. Yesterday I started making some calls on quarterly services (to put a stop to them), but also called my oil dealer asking them to not make any more deliveries between now and the end-of-October closing. They said the smarter thing (and best way to recap my money) would be to fill the tank the day before closing so that the buyer would be asked to pay for the full tank at day of closing instead of some guesstimate of the amount actually left in the tank. Really?

Help! Is this the smart way to handle this situation and my money? Or the smart way for the oil dealer to handle my money?? I hope people out there can tell me. I'm seeing my realtor on Friday and will ask him then, but was curious if others might know the answer. This is a new one on me. Figure the answer will be helpful to anyone buying a new home.

Saving money on auto loans

I stumbled on a government website created to help people save money. WooHoo! Some of the ideas are helpful. Thought I would share a few here....

In terms of Auto Loans:
Make a large down payment and go for the shortest term possible to get the best interest rate (and save tons of money).

Check with your own bank on financing before agreeing to dealer financing. It can land both ways on this one given some of the special incentive financing deals offrer by car companies -- but it's best to know, in advance, where you'll get the best rate.

Look at both sides of the coin on better low-rate financing and lower sale prices by way of a rebate. Getting a low interest rate may mean paying a higher price on the car. Do the math to be sure.

Fall Clean-Up

Don't let the impending change of season get you down. Yes, there is likely yard work to be done (and at my house, we're talking tons and tons of leaves), but use the mindset to get yourself to your local Garden Center. Check out great prices on yard tools. Think gifts for the holidays for your favorite gardener (and that might be you!). And pick up bulbs to get your garden ready for Spring blooms! A trip to the Garden Center might inspire you for some work in the Spring (a great way to pass the time as cooler weather heads our way).

You just never know, but there are bargains to be had, so don't let the deals pass you by.

September is National Coupon Month

Did you know that September is National Coupon Month? Me neither, but now we both do. I have to admit -- I used to hate clipping coupons, but as I have become more conscious of the money leaving the checkbook, I pay way more attention. I look for them before I buy something, and I hold onto them if I receive them at a store. I check local shopping websites to be sure I'm saving all I can (hint, hint). Are you doing the same?

Biggest caveat with coupons -- remember many coupons are put out there to push trial of a new product. Which is fine if you've been wanting to try the new product. Just be sure you buy things you meant to buy in the first place... things you are certain you will try and will not just sit on a shelf.

Quality counts

Just because a garment is expensive -- does not mean it's well made. I'm a big fan of buying quality over quantity. InStyle had a great checklist in their September issue on what to look for...

Check beads and any extras. The fabric needs to be strong enough to hold the doodads sewn onto it. Make sure the seams around the areas aren't pulled or stretched.

Check the buttons. Gently tug to make sure they are attached well. (I think that is one of my biggest pet peeves when buying new clothing -- buttons that are ready to fall off before the item comes off the hanger.) Also, be on the look-out for extras -- either sewn into a hem or attached in a packet. Always good to have a back-up. I write the garment description on the envelope to help keep track in my button-box. In fact -- I did that just this morning.

Look at the lining. Make sure it feels cozy against your skin, and that it helps the item hang correctly when worn.

Patterns matter. Make sure they line up perfectly. I tried an inexpensive shirt on this summer - and, oh baby, the pattern was so off, it made my head spin. Back to the rack!

Check the seams. Make sure they are neat, and InStyle calls French seams (turned under and beautifully finished to hide raw edges) the very best!

Zip it! Does the zipper glide easily? Snags in the store only lead to bad things at home. Check it a few times to be sure.

There you go. Smart shopping tip for the day: look for quality on clothing items you plan on keeping for a few seasons.

I stumbled upon the 3/50 Project back in March and made a note to mention it here. It's a really simple premise: encourage shoppers to stop by three local retailers throughout the month and spend $50. Local purchases help keep the local stores you appreciate in your community in business.

The 3/50 Project site notes that when local consumers patronize local businesses -- more money stays in the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. It's a simple premise and one that makes sense -- even more sense if you can save with discounted gift certificates purchased online (before you shop, have a service performed or eat out). Save and keep your local economy strong -- it doesn't get any better.

Reenie Goes Green; Part 3: Green Cleaning

I think I mentioned I asked my friends back in June how they were saving money in this turbulent economy. One friend responded with a reference to green cleaning. She is making all of her own cleaning products. Using very basic ingredients.

She didn't elaborate on her recipes, but I did some digging online, and found that white vinegar, baking soda, ammonia, rubbing alcohol, olive oil and lemon can be your best friends in your quest to both cut down on potential toxins, and SAVE money. I won't elaborate on recipes here, but they look super easy, and completely worth trying. I mean the costs do add up when you buy cleaning products -- why not give this a try with ingredients you already have at home. It's on my to-do list.

Tips for better fall shopping

Last Friday night I had a lovely evening reading my latest InStyle. I sat down and read the massive book from cover to cover. That doesn't usually happen, but I had the time and I was in the mood.

There were great stories on better shopping (they got me thinking about my last piece on shopping for back-to-school). Below find the ideas from the multi-page feature that really resonated with me.

If you know you need to update your Fall wardrobe, make it a priority in your calendar. BUT before you schedule that block of time (yes, I said schedule) -- check out what you have and decide what you need before you even leave the house. Need some new pieces? Add them to your list, but be specific. Need to replace some worn-out staples, make sure you list them.

In terms of that schedule block -- try to do it before Noon. Get staff when they are fresh and the store is still in order. Late in the day may translate into tired sales staff and sizes that are out of order and hard to track down.

Make the excursion easier by bringing the right things with you: the magazine noted that easy on/off items (like slip-on shoes and an easy shift dress) are key. They also stress having the right underwear depending on what you are looking to find. Need a strapless dress? Be sure you wear or bring your fave strapless bra to be sure everything works together. A roomy handbag is a plus. Make sure it goes over the shoulder for easy size-hunting, and because it will have room for your go-to heels if you need to judge looks with a different pair of shoes.

Finally, the after-purchase tips. I love these. Don't remove the tags right away. Hold onto the new items for a day or two to be sure you didn't buy in the heat of the moment. Also, be sure the new items work with the pieces you already have. Don't just assume they will go together. Pull the old pieces out of the closet and try everything on in front of a full length mirror. If they don't work, it may be best to return them and find pieces that have more flexibility.

School clothes - tips on getting through the shopping experience

School clothes... I still have memories of that shopping ordeal. The bad memories come from my own childhood, not from buying for my daughter -- surprisingly. I was fortunate in that my Aunt took my daughter school-clothes shopping for many years.

BUT, I was reading about fall shopping last night (in one of my many magazines) and it got me thinking about the impending change of season and how we all could shop better with a little extra thought. Today -- clothes for back to school. Next week - ideas for grown-ups.

First and foremost -- know what they need. If you haven't done it already -- do a fashion show with the clothes they already have. See what fits. See what needs to be fixed. AND get rid of the stuff that is either too far gone or is too small and needs to find a new home either with a younger sibling or at your local Goodwill or Salvation Army. This includes everything; socks, underwear, shirts, pants, shoes, sneaks.... You get the idea.

Next, look at the school dress code. Make sure nothing has changed from the year before. Are there rules against text on T-shirts? Do skirts or shorts need to be a certain length? Are jeans OK?

Make a list and stick to it. I say this all the time, but it's so easy to get off track if you don't know what you need. For older kids with eyes on high-end labels, discuss in advance what you are willing to pay for and what they will need to pay for.

Shop summer sales now. A lot of stuff from summer can be used as a layering piece in the fall. Look for sales on tees, jeans, underwear and socks -- again, those will take you into fall and maybe even winter. Lightweight summer sweaters can be a great way to start the fall.

Once you have gotten what you can from sale racks -- check out full price. BUT only buy what they need for the first few weeks of school. There will be more sales as the weeks go by.

Staying cool

OK, it's hot where I am. It's the middle of August -- it's supposed to be hot. Right? In any case, as this is the summer of selling my house, I elected to leave the ACs out of the windows. They look so ugly to me, and up until this week, it has been OK.

So, to beat the heat over this past weekend I went to a matinee on Saturday afternoon with my daughter. Yes, it was beautiful and sunny outside, and some folks may have picked beach over being inside, but I elected cool. It was the best few dollars I spent all weekend.

With that beat-the-heat idea behind me, I started thinking that there had to be more ways to beat the heat on a budget. Leave it to the Internet. I found a few great ideas on how to stay cool, for less.

Tip 1: Consider visiting your public library. Do some free reading while you're there.

Tip 2: Check out local listings for free or low-cost events happening in your city or town that are likely held in air conditioned space. Thinks theater, art exhibits, music or craft shows.

Tip 3: Hang out in a roller skating or ice skating rink. If you don't skate -- offer to take your kids or your friends' kids. You can always watch them skate and read/relax at the same time.

Tip 4: Take yourself out to lunch during the heat of the day, instead of at dinner. The restaurant will likely be well air conditioned. Be sure to look for money savings gift certificates online before you go.

At home, be sure to keep shades drawn and use ceiling fans when possible. And hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Tips for home chores

You've heard me talk about my house being on the market. Well, it's still on the market, but that doesn't keep me from reading all kinds of home fix-up tips. I stumbled on a handful that appear to be from This Old House. I love these ideas for those of us looking to do work on our own.

Love this first one, and, yes, I think I've heard it before, but it really doesn't stick unless you know painting is in your future. Make sure you note the paint color of the freshly painted room by writing it on a piece of tape and sticking it on the backside of the the light-switch cover plate. I can't tell you how handy this would have been when I was retouching some of the rooms in my house before the For Sale sign hit the front lawn. This will keep you from guessing and buying the wrong color when you need to touch-up. Don't ask...

Second tip -- and I will say I have not tried this one. Please comment if you have and let us know it it really works. Try canola or corn oil to clean oil-based paint off skin instead of mineral spirits. They say it works great and softens your hands, too. Just wash it off with soap and water. One less thing to buy if you keep vegetable oil in your kitchen.

Third tip, and I am so going to try this. Try spraying Nair hair remover down a clogged-with-hair drain. Again, one less product to buy if you already keep Nair in your bathroom.

I'll share more of these as time goes by, but these were my top faves from the more-than-thirty I found.

Entertaining kids for FREE!

A friend who knows I write this blog keeps sending me great money saving ways to entertain kids. Now, let it be known that my "kid" is 20 years old and typically does not look to me for entertainment, but I can't help wondering if what my friend sent recently was available when my daughter was younger. Clearly, I was asleep at the switch if these fun how-to classes were available back in the 1990s.

My friend has shared that big box home centers in our area hold simple how-to-build workshops for kids (typically 5-12 years old). For FREE! I checked the one she sent and with their major competitor, and they both have classes. They're not every weekend, but hey, if you can sprinkle in some free with some paid stuff (and hopefully discounted), all the better for your wallet. It may have been a while back, but I still remember how costly summer vacation-entertaining for kids could be. I'm all for a good deal. And here's a personal tip: I'm a fan of locally owned home/hardware stores; maybe check in with one of the local establishments and see if they'll offer the same. What a great way to bring a community/neighborhood together.

One more reason to use your credit card online

Back around the holidays I mentioned that it was wiser to use a credit card vs. a debit card when shopping online. In fact, a reader asked a specific question on why. Well, a friend just pointed out a recent news story out of New Hampshire that makes the reason crystal clear. So, I feel the need to say it again.

Basically, a man bought a pack of cigarettes at a gas station using his debit card. His account was incorrectly charged over 23 quadrillion dollars. For those wondering (and, yes, I was one of them), a quadrillion is the next step higher above a trillion. Yikes. AND it is a 17-digit number. Double yikes!

Apparently the man spent two hours on the phone with his bank trying to get the mess untangled -- all the while making it that much harder for him to manage his daily cash flow. Not to mention the overdraft fee he must have been fielding. If he had used a credit card -- the issue would have been entirely different. You can issue a challenge on any charge on a credit card, and that allows for resolution time that does not impact your checking account balance.

Now, my question is what did the receipt say? I have only once in my life had the bank do something different than the slip (and that bobo was in my favor -- so it was all good). So, two pieces of wisdom -- it is easier to manage issues with a credit card vs. a debit card. AND always, always look at the receipt if shopping in person!

Better health care shopping

Boy, I sure hate even typing that headline, but it is a reality we all need to deal with. Just last week I read some tips on finding ways to save on health care insurance when, days later, one of the very scenarios I read about happened to me.

I had a quick medical procedure performed last month. I asked my doctor about his network status and thought I was completely covered when I confirmed his network membership. Turns out the surgery center was also in network, but the anesthesiologist was not. I received a health insurance summary noting what my additional out-of-pocket expense would be after my carrier paid their out-of-network share. I had made the very mistake the tips list warned against: I had failed to make absolutely sure that EVERYONE involved in my medical procedure was in the network.

Fortunately for me -- when I called the non-network provider and explained the situation they agreed to accept the insurance payment as the total. Lucky for me.

So, be a good health care consumer, and do what I did not: don't assume everyone is in the network just because your physician is a member. My situation had a happy outcome, but I think that was sheer luck. I won't make that mistake again.

Groceries - more tips for saving dough at the grocery store

A friend shared a Yahoo! Finance article on "The Lazy Ways to Save on Groceries." I know I did a quick entry back in February on saving by buying above and below eye level, but these extra tips are great ideas, too.

-Per Unit Pricing

Let the little label on the shelf do the math. Be sure to check out the cost per unit when comparing prices. Strangely enough the big container isn't always the least expensive. Often, but not always.

-Cut Your Own Veggies and Fruit

You will pay more for convenience. Plain and simple. To save on produce -- cut the veggies and fruit by hand, and skip the pre-cut options. Same applies to single serving containers of packaged foods like oatmeal, cookies and chips.

-Skip Status

Store brands are often on par with name brands. Do your own taste test before writing off the store brand's quality.

-Stick to the List

How many items do you impulse-buy? I'm too embarrassed to include the answer here. Trust me. It isn't pretty. Make a list. Stick to it when you shop (much like with holiday shopping) and you will save. Plain and simple.

-Stop Feeding your Trash Can

Americans waste a lot of food. A whole lot of food. Remember the list? Make a weekly menu while you're at it, and avoid buying more than you can possible use -- especially perishable items.

I've been seeing a lot of stories on tax holidays (days you can shop and not pay sales tax). Interesting to note -- some areas have cancelled previously scheduled tax holidays, so I'm reluctant to link to a list that has them all (for fear the list might be dated). Below find the list I think is correct as of today. Please check with state officials to verify dates and eligible purchases:

Pet savings

Big news. I'm getting a new puppy. She was born on June 27 and will be coming home with me on Saturday, August 22. To say I'm excited would be the understatement of the year. Now, my old-man dog probably won't share my enthusiasm, but I am hopeful he will learn to love her the way I already do. He's going to be 12 in November -- and I'm hoping he's not too old for some new tricks. The new pup's name is Marlo (remember That Girl actress and Phil Donahue's wife, Marlo Thomas??). See my Marlo pictured here at 11 days old.

So, why do I tell you this here? Well, when I asked friends for their tips on saving money I got a long laundry list of ideas ranging from how to save on electricity (see July 14 post), to, you guessed it, ways to save on pet expenses. She mentioned that her Veterinarian holds monthly vaccine clinics where you pay a smaller charge than a usual visit (only if the pet has been seen by the doc within the last year and is not receiving a vaccine that state law mandates must be given by a doc). We don't go to the same practice, but she mentioned her doc gives a small discount on visits to families with multiple pet patients. I have two cats and a dog already -- Marlo will make four. I'm thinking I must qualify for something...

Reenie Goes Green; Part 2: Saving electricity

This post is courtesy of my friends. I kept seeing this bank commercial about the little things people are doing to save money in our challenging economy. It got me thinking: I bet my friends have great money saving ideas that I should share here. My email plea went out last week and within 24 hours I had enough tips to fill a small book. So -- instead of putting them all together, I'm going to share them in categories. Today, the category is electricity. From the pens of Allie, Brad, Mary-Anne, Kyle and Stephen. Thanks, guys!

-If you're lucky enough to have a vacation home -- be sure to turn off the electric hot water heater when you'll be gone for a bit of time. Speaking of hot water heaters -- one friend mentioned saving $50 a month on her electric bill by switching from an electric hot water heater to an on-demand propane hot water heater. (That one only works if you have access to propane.)

-"Be maniacal about turning off lights." (Had to leave the quote -- I don't think I've ever heard my friend actually be 'maniacal' about anything.)

-Keep your dryer (please make it energy efficient), but when at all possible dry your clothes on a line. Friends tell me they save $50 a month in electric bills during the summer.

-Beware phantom load. This sounds like something out of Star Trek, right? Well, in plain English it means to unplug electric appliances when they're not in use. Think coffee maker, toaster, your cell phone charger when the cell phone is in your purse, the VCR, the microwave, etc, etc. Even if you are not using the item -- there is a small draw of electricity when you keep it plugged in. And, while you're thinking about plugs and table lamps, consider energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (but I've said that before).

Polaroid PoGo

OK... I'm still trolling through my stack of old magazines and stumbled on the details of the Polaroid PoGo camera -- launched in January of this year. OK, I'm behind. I admit it.

I don't know about you, but I have fond memories of Polaroid cameras and my Dad. He was a gadget-hound like I am -- guess I come by it rightly. In any case, this new digital Polaroid comes with a built-in printer (yes, I said built-in). You snap the pic and you print it, and unlike the Polaroid cameras from my youth -- you can store the picture, too. Oh, and you can choose to print your photo with the tell-tale Polaroid border of our (my) youth. Brilliant. I want one. What a fun thing to bring to a summer bbq with friends.

Anyone out there have one of these yet? I am so curious on how they feel. I loved, loved, loved the Polaroid press release. It noted that most people remember the fun of shaking the photo to make it materialize, which, of course, you don't have to do with this new Polaroid, unless you want to. This print comes out ready to view. "...the 'shake' is totally optional." Did I already say brilliant?

Save money and feel pretty!

I love ideas that save money and make a season more fun at the same time.
I spent a large part of the 4th of July weekend going through a tall (and I mean TALL) stack of magazines.
I found a couple of great money saving beauty tips. Don't get me wrong -- I love getting pampered at the spa or salon, but in between visits -- a girl needs to take care of herself - right?

Tip 1 from InStyle: if you want your face to start the day with a little glow -- simply mix a drop of self-tanner into your night cream the night before. Be sure to let the mixture dry before you pull on your PJs or touch your skin to the pillowcase.

Tip 2 from Natural Health: mix your own body scrub. Combine 1 cup of sugar (use white or brown sugar with medium size granules) with 3/4 cup of oil (the mag suggests fractionated coconut oil), and 2-3 drops of the essential oil of your choice (simply pick your favorite scent, like lavender or peppermint). Stir to combine and use like the body scrub you normally purchase.

BUT be sure to treat yourself to a relaxing body scrub or facial at your favorite salon or spa (using a discounted gift certificate, of course). There's nothing finer during a stay-cation than a little local pampering!

Cell Phone Savings

You've seen the commercials. I won't mention the carrier, but basically the beautiful spokesperson offers mobile phone customers "plan makeovers." I know it got me thinking about ways to save on my monthly cell phone charges, and I don't even use that carrier. Then I happened to stumble upon a few articles on general ways to reduce your monthly cell expense.

-Check your plan. Make sure you are signed up for the right level. Get a handle on your use-history and select accordingly.

-If you talk less than 200 minutes monthly (and don't need a data plan), you should be looking at a pre-paid plan. A couple of carriers offer programs for 200 minutes and lower that range in the $20-$25 range. A big savings compared to my monthly plan, but I do need a data package.

-Search out other calling plans (separate from your carrier) if you are making international calls. The swing in price per minute can be staggering.

-Look at when you talk. Do you do most of your chatting in the evening? Be sure to check out special flat-fee overnight calling features. This way you can get bare minimum minutes during peak, and play a flat fee for unlimited calls in the evening.

-If you send or receive even one text a day -- look at a text plan. Especially important if you have text-happy teens on your plan. Paying a flat .20 per text could add up during the course of the month and make a flat fee well worth the expense.

Cash for Clunkers

Have you heard about this new program? Some call it "Cash for Clunkers" -- others stick with the more formal moniker: the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS). If you own a care that has an 18 or fewer combined miles per gallon fuel rating, you may qualify for this rebate program. If the thought of driving around in your gas guzzler this summer has you less than thrilled, and you're thinking about a new car purchase... you need to know a few things about how this works:

-Your vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the trade-in date
-Only purchase or lease of new vehicles qualify
-Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG (some very large pick-up trucks and cargo vans have different requirements)
-Trade-in vehicles must be registered and insured continuously for the full year preceding the trade-in
-You don't need a voucher, dealers will apply a credit at purchase

Most of the info I've read says to shop in late July to early August -- just be sure your dealer is up on all of the details before you sign on the bottom line. Depending on what you buy (and if your vehicle qualifies) you could save between $3500-$4500.

The program is being administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and they are coordinating with car dealers on how to make the program work. Keep in mind, purchases need to be made from the program start to November 1, 2009. From what I have found -- the start date is a little loose because of program start-up issues, but well worth waiting for. The best place to find info on how the program works, or if your old car even qualifies? The government's official website: http://cars.gov. Don't let non-government websites ask you for personal information (some of those bad-boys have already popped up). You can get all you need on the dot gov site.

Making a house a home

I think I have hit the 70+ number on houses I've toured since I decided to put my house on the market back at the beginning of this calendar year. My house still has not sold, and I'm trying to do all of the things they tell you to do -- but that said, I'm still out looking at new houses every chance I get. I want to be ready when that great offer comes in -- I want to know what's out there and what I like.

Don't get me wrong -- I love my current house. It just happens to be almost twice the size I need, and in this tender economy, that just doesn't make a lick of sense. I'm looking to downsize -- to lower my monthly mortgage, lower my monthly utility bills, lose the equity line balance, and lessen my commitment to weekly interior and exterior chores. Know what I mean? I'm also looking forward to pruning out even more clutter.

The fun part is when I stumble upon articles about decorating trends because I have to tell you -- the majority of the houses I've been looking at will need help in that department. (Not all, but surely most.)
I found this nugget on the Kansas City Star website -- wallpaper is making a comeback! I've never been a huge fan, but the article I stumbled upon talked about some interesting trends. They include:

-The designs are not all that different in 2009, but have gone large scale.
-People are using the larger images in rooms where people don't spend tons of time -- like powder rooms or hallways.
-Doing just one wall, or even the ceiling, adds dimension without overpowering. (I personally love the ceiling idea -- I had a darker shade painted on the ceiling of my bathroom in my last house -- I LOVED it! I can definitely see how a wallpaper design could add the same fun effect.)
-Modern wallpaper can have raised texture now -- like never before. The article likened the update to matching up with couture trends on fashion runways.
-The green movement has hit wallpaper factories, too. Not only do people use grass-like motifs -- some of today's wallpaper is made of bamboo, reeds, natural grasses and the like -- making it both eco-designy and eco-friendly at the same time.
-Designs are being influenced by far-away places. India and Africa seem to be the trend setter areas for now.

I'm toying with this whole wallpaper idea because sometimes paint just doesn't have enough punch in a room. And the article notes -- that new wallpapers are becoming both easier to install and easier to remove (when the time comes for you to change up the room).

Funny - most of the houses I've seen lately don't have wallpaper -- except for those top-of-wall borders I really don't like. I'm thinking doing a single wall or a ceiling sounds like a great, inexpensive way to make a room feel more polished. I'll keep you posted as my new house journey continues...

Reenie Goes Green; Part 1: Saving water

I opened my water bill last night. It was a good 25% higher than last month. Yes, my daughter has moved home for the summer, but really? That much more? So happens I stumbled on a great piece in Natural Health magazine on how to save water. I think sharing some of the green tips I stumble upon deserve space in this place. Today is part 1 of a series that could go on for a bit. I'll probably do a green piece every couple of weeks. If you have ideas -- please share them.

Natural Health offered up four tips, and three sound like a quick trip to your favorite local hardware store will handle the detail. The fourth idea is more of a long-term commitment, but one worth noting:

Tip 1 (the long-term one)
Choose a front loading washing machine that is ENERGY STAR-rated. Front loaders use about half the water as their top-loading cousins. This change can save you 20-25 gallons per load.

Tip 2
Install faucet aerators. These gems will help you reduce water consumption by about 60%.

Tip 3
Install a low-flow shower head. This one might be harder for those with long hair -- I know. But I have short hair and am not too worried. The magazine says the newer models offer plenty of water pressure. Depending on how many showers are going on in your house -- you could save thousands of gallons a year.

Tip 4
Check for toilet leaks. This, dear readers, is one I've never heard before. Apparently you need a special dye tablet (and the article mentions that some water companies give them out for free -- check with your company for details, but I'm guessing they are also available at hardware stores). You drop one in the tank, and if dye appears in the toilet bowl -- you have a leak. Call a plumber to fix, and if you have to replace the toilet, opt for a water-efficient model. Another 2,000 gallons saved (but that must depend on the number of people in your house -- and the magazine does not elaborate).

So there you have it. Save water, save money. It's that easy.

Eat your veggies!

I love Bon Appetit's online calendar. I learn something new every month. Today's tidbit is really about tomorrow, but completely connects to something I was thinking about today. Sound confusing? Stick with me.

Tomorrow (June 17) is Eat Your Vegetables Day. How does that connect with today, you ask? Well, I was visiting with my eye doctor this morning and had a good check-up. It got me thinking about how lucky we are when we have good health. Which then got me thinking about food and maintaining good health (all of the waiting-room magazines were about healthy eating). Which, of course, got me thinking about making better food choices. I'm not going to lie -- I like to eat out. I like it a lot. But today -- I realized that if I'm going to continue to eat out -- I need to make better choices. Simple things like whole grains, less fried food, more veggies (see it does connect) or no sugar in the coffee. I will never tell you to stop doing something, but I will suggest you consider modifications. Baby steps. They add up. So, tomorrow - when you're eating your vegetables -- think about other ways to keep healthy and if you're going to be eating out -- save some money along the way. It's as easy as buying a discounted gift certificate to your favorite local restaurant.

June is Great Outdoors Month

In addition to being Dairy Month, June is also the home of Great Outdoors Month. Are you and your family ready to enjoy the great outdoors? I'm a city girl, I admit it. I grew up in the city, and have always done better sleeping inside versus sleeping outside. But camping can be fun IF you're prepared. And prepared means having the gear you need before you hit the great outdoors, because if you're buying stuff on the fly -- you're probably spending too much.

Check out this great gear checklist at The Camping Club's website. Be sure you check with local retailers for the best deals on the items you don't already have on hand.

In addition to this list -- I would add the following thing: a head lamp. I looked silly, but it made all the difference in the world on my Fall 2008 camping trip. I also tucked a heavy duty plastic bag in my pack for storing the last day's wet towel -- kept my other stuff nice and dry for the trip home.

Now get out there and enjoy the great outdoors before June is over!

Father's Day Gift Tips

Father's Day is on Sunday, June 21st this year.
I've been trying to think about some different gifts -- not that ordinary tie or gadget. Not that there's anything wrong with a tie or a gadget!

How about a round of golf with Dad? Whether it's on the 21st or another day -- a handmade gift certificate noting the selected time and date would be a great addition to a Father's Day card.

My daughter once scheduled a special Father/daughter-only lunch & movie with her Dad. Yes, I supplied the funds (she was 13 at the time), but it was a special moment for the two of them.

Is Dad a Mr. Fix-It dying to break free? Check out his tool selection and see what's missing. Surprise him with that special tool he's been coveting. And as mentioned in a previous post -- you'll probably find some good pricing on tools this month.

For the Dad striving to up his eco cred, how about an aluminum water bottle? No more plastic bottles. Money saved -- along with the environment.

Is your Dad the house's Grill Meister? There are some great tools to check out, from fork-thermometers, to great aprons, lights and grilling tools.

Does your Dad love a clean car? You can go the homemade route and offer up some handmade car wash gift certificates for driveway baths, or go a step further and pick up a car wash/detailing gift book from your Dad's favorite local car wash.

Tips for saving while you travel

It's summer time and you're probably thinking about a vacation, but in our turbulent economy you may be reluctant to outlay the funds for a vacation the way you used to spend. I know I'm thinking about this, so I did my usual Internet search and found some great money saving tips for traveling abroad on gogalavanting.com:

Understand airfare pricing cycles. Airlines change their rates on a pre-determined cycle. Be sure you are looking at rates at the best time to buy. Also -- consider traveling through a different close-by city. That on top of being flexible on departure and return dates may help you save some serious cash.

It traveling abroad with a group, consider renting an apartment or swapping your house. You'll have more room, you'll get a better sense of local culture and you'll probably save money in the long run.

Learn to say "no" to tour guides. Be sure you take control of your experience. It's illegal in most places, but sometimes unscrupulous tour guides will take you to restaurants, shops and sites where they receive kick backs. If the prices you are seeing seem higher than your expectation -- insist on a location a few storefronts down to see what's really going on.

Speaking of storefronts. It's always best to shop locally for souvenirs when abroad. This way you are more likely to get items truly crafted in the area you are visiting. A new idea for souvenirs/gifts: think about buying prints from local artists.

Finally, consider leaving your travelers' checks at home. They can end up being more costly in the end, and you don't always get the best exchange rate. You'll get better exchange rates using your debit card in a local ATM. Using credit cards for purchases also helps with getting a better rate of exchange. Be sure to have your bank/credit card company information in a safe place. Always good to have the info you need on hand should you lose your cards while on vacation. Just don't keep the info in your wallet. Also -- per gogalavanting and my own personal experience, it's a good idea to have a little local currency on hand before you depart. That way you're not scrambling when you arrive. Your local bank branch can help -- just factor in a few weeks in case they need to get the currency from an out-of-state source.

A lot of these principles apply to domestic travel as well. Be sure to check out local shopping websites before heading to a new city. Much like this site -- you may find some great local deals before you even leave home. Shopping local really is the way to go!

Plant selection tips

So, if you struggle with how to make your yard beautiful -- this post might be for you. It's a struggle I have. In the end I always trust the folks at my favorite Garden Center, but I want to appear closer to smart than not when I get there. I found these four tips on a state agricultural website:

-If you choose the right plant for your area it will flourish. It will grow well, defend itself against pests, fit the space, enjoy the sun and tolerate the soil. Be sure to pick plants that are right for where you are going to plant them. Don't be swayed by a pretty face.

-Think small when planting trees. Smaller diameter trees don't require as much maintenance and start adding depth to your landscape faster than larger diameter trees. Another tip in this area -- think about where you are planting the tree, and what kind of root system it has. Don't be too close to a house or select a tree whose roots will have negative impact on your home's foundation.

-Stay away from invasive plants. They spread and they can endanger native vegetation. Most states have a list available of plants that ought not be on your property.

-Look for plants that are naturally pest and disease resistant. If they have built-in immunity -- you reduce the need for pesticides.

As I said, my favorite Garden Center is the best place for advice, but these tips can have you planning ahead before you stop by.

That whine aside, it's the start of a new month and time to talk deals for June.
Did you know June is National Dairy Month? Nope, me neither, but now you do. That might be why ice cream is on the list of good deals in June.

-other dairy products (but once you have ice cream -- do you really need any others??)

In the non-food category; look for:
-home fix-it tools and materials (a nod to Father's Day, I suspect)

10 Lawn Care Tips

My daughter and I were walking the dog the other day and happened by a neighbor's lush, green lawn. Even my daughter commented on how healthy and beautiful the lawn looked (perhaps it was a veiled critique of our rather sad-looking back lawn). I started doing some research on tips for a healthier, do-it-yourself lawn. Here they are:

1. Water thoroughly at least once a week (and more during really dry spells). If you leave footprints while walking on the grass -- you probably need more water.

2. Take care of the weeds and pests FAST. Don't wait for them to take over. Be sure to get the right supplies at your local garden center.

3. It is OK to leave clippings behind if they are not too long. The clippings can add nutrients back to the soil. In season -- that might mean mowing every five days. Cut back when the weather gets very dry.

4. Make sure the blades on your lawn mower are sharp. If they're dull you end up tearing and hurting the grass. If you tend to hit debris (like rocks and sticks) while mowing -- you will probably have to sharpen the blades more often.

5. Reseed the bare spots early fall or spring.

6. Fertilize correctly. Check with the folks at your local garden center for proper application timing and tips.

7. Have you aerated your lawn? You can do this with raking, a dedicated aerator or even aerating shoes. Adding space to the soil allows the grass to breathe and grow better.

8. Don't cut it too short. And avoid mowing when the grass is wet.

9. Change up your mowing direction. You'll mow more evenly if the blades of grass don't get into a set growing pattern.

10. Clear large debris before you get the mower going. Saves you time later and helps to protect your mower blades.

And, if all else fails and doing your own lawn is not your thing -- look for a local professional.

Memorial Day Weekend... Let the painting begin

So, I stumbled on this cool product and it got me thinking about Home Improvement chores. Sure, Memorial Day Weekend is about barbecues and seeing friends, but it's also that time when we get stuff done around the house. This Paint 'N Pour lid by Homax looks like a great way to make painting chores just a little easier. I don't know about you, but I hate dealing with paint can lids, and always fear I'm not getting them back on correctly (and worry that my paint will dry up in the process).

If you are planning on painting this weekend. Make sure you have all you need on hand. There's nothing more frustrating than having to run out for supplies mid-project.

Is your car ready for Summer vacation?

I just had my car in the shop. A kind stranger noticed my headlight was out and got my attention in the parking lot. I'm not sure how long it had been out or how long it would have stayed out without someone mentioning to me. I haven't been driving after dark very much - so it may have taken a long time. In any case, my quick trip to get the bulb replaced reminded me that summer vacation driving is ahead and it's time to check out a few things.

I found a great article at Road & Travel Magazine.

Keep these tips in mind:

If you stick to the vehicle maintenance schedule -- that's your first step in avoiding vacation road trip mishaps.

Try to get your car checked out at least one week before a planned driving vacation -- to allow time for any issues.

Have your mechanic:

Check all fluid levels.

Check tire pressure and treads. Don't forget the spare tire. (Make sure you have everything you need to change a tire in your car before you hit the road for vacation.)

Check the brakes.

Check all belts and hoses.

Make sure all lights are in working order.

Replace the windshield wipers if the blades are old.

Check that the AC is working properly.

Things for you to keep in mind:

Pack an emergency kit (blankets, water, extra fluids, small tools, flares, first aid kit, etc).

Pack your car lightly if possible. Extra weight and extra heat are not a great combination for the engine.

Remember your pets -- never leave them unattended in a parked car during the summer. Not even for a short time. The interior temperature shoots up way too high and the heat can be deadly for your furry friend.

Unique Wedding Gifts

Wedding season is upon us. I love seeing some of the newer ideas for gift giving. It was a whole different (teeny bit boring) routine when my friends were getting married. It's way more fun now.

As couples wait to tie the knot it seems they are more situated in life. Some own homes together or are merging their homes, and just don't need the kitchen and household stuff their parents needed.

Gift registries are great things, but I also like these more creative ideas:

-Outdoor furniture and accessories... think about comfortable lounge chairs or a chiminea; or a garden center gift certificate for new perennial plants and trees.

-If two homes are merging... think about offering to pay for an interior designer or professional organizer. It may make the merging process run a bit more smoothly.

-For the couples who already have the stuff they need... how about a monthly bouquet of fresh flowers program.

-One website I saw mentioned that a fine wine is the choice of "older couples." Somehow I think younger couples would enjoy, too.

-Again, for couples who have the "usual" stuff.... how about new sports equipment like snow skis or water skis.

-One source suggested helping out with the honeymoon costs or even offering up the first married night in a luxury hotel (this is a plan-ahead gift).

-I read about some financial institutions setting up financial registries where family and friends can contribute to specific financial goals; like a first house, honeymoon trip or vacation retreat.

-And, finally, some couples are suggesting guests donate to favorite charities in lieu of a gift.

I love all of these ideas. I do. I do!

Did you know today, May 12, was National Nutty Fudge Day? I didn't either until I stumbled upon it in Bon Apetit's daily food calendar. So, here's my theory -- if you don't make fudge, today is a day to buy yourself a little treat. Plain and simple. All is good in the world when there's chocolate.

And if not a little treat for you -- how about for a special Mom? (So she knows Mother's Day is not just a once-a-year kind of thing.) You know, sometimes the small unexpected treats are the best kind.

Normally I do not send my readers away to other websites. I like keeping them to myself (selfish, I know), but I stumbled upon a sweet site today - and I feel the need to share. Mother's Day is Sunday -- maybe seeing these two girls working their hearts out kicked my motherly instinct up a notch. Gabby and Emma have created a website where they are selling duct tape bows.

Their net proceeds are going to the We Can Solve the Climate Crisis Campaign because the girls are concerned about the environment and want to take action. Personal action. The bows are adorable, and I applaud these enterprising young ladies for being so proactive. Check them out. I think there is a bow or ten in my future. And what better way to add a fun touch to that gift you've picked up for Mom ? (OK -- so it won't get to you in time for Sunday, but you can let Mom know it's en route. She'll be impressed. I'm sure of it.)

Shopping made easy

I was flipping through a 2008 holiday gift guide the other day -- yes, I keep them for that long. I stumbled onto this item and was amazed. Talk about getting you organized. The SmartShopper allows you to type in or record the grocery items you need (depends on which model you buy). In any case, keep this baby in your kitchen and anyone in the family can add items to the list. When you're ready to run your errands, check the list, make any edits and press print (did I mention it also lets you add errand stops like the post office and bank?). The SmartShopper organizes the list by category so you're not left wandering in the grocery store aisles. Saves time, and I imagine saves you money as you navigate quickly through the store. You're not as inclined to pick up stray items because you know which aisles you need to travel. I'm liking this one. Grocery shopping is always a challenge for me. This little gadget might just make it more fun.

May Day and Mother's Day

Flowers. Flowers. Flowers.

Need I say more?
Today is May Day, and there is no better reason to surprise someone with a special basket of blooms. The ritual is to leave them on your neighbor's step or hanging on their door knob, ring the bell, and run like crazy. May Day is a big deal for me. It was celebrated at my school every year. Our May Day Festival included games, food, and, of course, dancing. Every elementary grade did a dance, but the 6th graders did the traditional Maypole dance. It was the final dance, and it was something you looked forward to as you as you graduated to each higher grade. It was quite the ritual, and one I remember very fondly.

AND... as long as we're talking flowers. Plan now for Mother's Day; a short nine days away!

A quick tidbit about Mother's Day for your next Trivial Pursuit game: it was first celebrated in 1908 and Congress made it an official day in 1914.

Victory Gardens

By now you've heard that there's a vegetable garden at the White House... reminiscent of the garden planted by Eleanor Roosevelt (and in the reading I've done -- that was the last time 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue had a vegetable garden). In any case... it has me thinking. Yes, I admit to having a black thumb, but I think this year I'm going to at least try herbs. The other day I made a recipe that called for fresh herbs, and I nearly fell over when I saw the price at the grocery store. Seemed so high for something I probably would not use all of before the leaves turned brown. This White House garden is inspiring me.

Sooo.... I'm going to start with herbs this year -- just a few. I'm planning a nursery run in the next two weeks -- to pick out some colorful flowers for my outdoor planters. I'll be picking up some herb seedlings while I'm at it. A little money out, a lot of money saved. In my mind, money saved for little splurges like letting someone else cook...

Looking good on Earth Day 2009

Earth Day is tomorrow -- Wednesday, April 22. What are you you doing to look good?

Here are some ideas to consider...

When you shop - bring your own bag. I've been reading story after story about great reusable bags available for purchase at almost every store imaginable. Bring them to the grocery store, the mall and to the farmer's market. Plus, plenty of causes use bag sales as fundraisers. This is one bandwagon worth jumping on!

Are you recycling yet? I am very fortunate in that my community offers curbside pick-up. I can't imagine how much more I'd be sending to the landfill if this were not an option. Even if your community does not have a curbside program -- consider committing to your own program. Many communities allow you to drop off recyclables in one container -- also called single-stream recycling. Basically, it means an end to the once time-consuming chore of sorting paper from plastic and metal.

As you unclutter your home -- when you purchase new energy efficient electronics are you making sure you recycle your old electronics? Really not a good idea to just trash them -- many contain lead or other hazardous compounds. Please recycle properly.

Are you letting the light shine brightly in your home? Make it a CFL bulb and save tons more energy over the lifetime of the bulb. Just be sure you dispose of these babies properly. They do contain microscopic amounts of mercury -- but mercury is mercury -- no matter the amount.

More Spring Fashion Trends

I subscribe to a newsletter on style and fashion. Yes, my daughter would find that very hard to believe. In any case, today's edition had a link to Spring/Summer jewelry trends. Apparently "statement" jewelry is the thing (and is most likely going to be the thing for Fall/Winter as well). Look for geometric shapes, exotic pieces, and anything with rich colors, prominent stones or colorful gems.

Even more interesting about this trend... was the idea that matching these larger-than-life pieces with bold and colorful clothing is the way to go. Last season it was about having the jewelry be big and bold and the star of the outfit. This year -- it's about being as interesting as possible. The term "clashing colors" was even used (that might not be something I can do, but I can follow the trend in other ways).

The fun part about this trend... the pieces shown in the article were designer-made, but looked like less expensive pieces I've seen in the stores. So - you can go expensive or you can have fun with the trend and not pay as much. Better yet, look to local jewelry craftsmen for their take on this fun look.

For Sale

I know this isn't the best time to be selling a house, but I want to downsize; four stories plus one person and three pets, just doesn't compute. OK, it totals four on both sides of the equation, but you get the idea. My daughter is a student, so she is in and out, but still... It's time to reduce my 'footprint.'

My friends thinks I'm a little crazy, but I'm getting tons of things done to the house to make it that much more appealing to would-be buyers. I think the Realtor approves (though I think he thinks I need to speed it up a bit).

I'm patching all of the chipped paint, hired a heavy duty carpet cleaner to handle the rug on the second floor landing, and have bought heavy duty boxes to pack up the clutter. I promise -- I'm paring down the clutter as I go. Nothing is going into a box that will not be proudly displayed in the next house. I'm clearing out the basement and the garage too -- figure it needs to happen when I move, so why not start now. As a regular Real Estate Open House participant that is one thing that can really make a negative impression on me during a house tour -- an extra-cluttered basement makes me feel like the family isn't really ready to move.

With all of my uncluttering, I'm making multiple trips to Goodwill and to the consignment shop. I want my clutter to be someone else's treasure, and ultimately put less into the local landfill.

On the outside... I'm having the driveway sealed, the walkway and deck power washed and stained. I had the granite step into the breezeway straightened out, and the threshold repaired. Finally -- having someone touch up the fascia boards and clean up the bricks on my chimney. I'm a handyman's dream right now. The list keeps getting longer. BUT from what I hear -- Real Estate offices are getting busier. I hope that's a good sign for them, and for me.

Bowling for fun and for fitness

I admit it -- I don't bowl very often, BUT I recently went with a bunch of folks from a class I am taking and we had an absolute blast. All ages. All skill levels. It was just plain fun, and we giggled the whole time. I got thinking about it from a fitness perspective and did a little checking. One blog post I found says four bowlers per lane... count it as fun. Two bowlers per lane... can be aerobic. I think we were 4-5 people per lane, so we counted in the fun+ category. Tell that to my aching back the next day. One lesson learned: fun or not, do a little stretching before playing. But the sore back was well worth it. A Sunday afternoon of bowling was a great way to spend time with friends.

My group is talking about wanting to go again, and I'm all in. Maybe I can get better at the whole thing practicing on the Wii we have at home. I'm actually better on the real wood than on the Wii - somehow always manage to hook "the ball" on the screen. What is that about??

I love having access to the worldwide web, and I know my older (nearly 72 year old) Aunt would love it, too, but regular computers seem to be a little overwhelming. She's had them, but they can be confusing, and then she just gives up. Too many bells and whistles when all you want is email access and web surfing capability. BUT, perhaps, no more. I just read this interesting story in the News Tribune about SeniorPC created by Hewlett-Packard and offered through Microsoft (in both desktop and laptop versions).

Priced at under $1300 (plus any monthly ISP cost) this would be a great option for my Aunt. It might be a great option for older parents with Mother's Day and Father's Day not too far off -- especially if siblings pool their gift funds. A great way to give the more tech-phobic folks in your life easy access to email, photos, news and great shopping sites. :) Hint, hint...

Ahhh, the beginning of April. It's time for my monthly list of good deals to be had, or at least looked for during the month. This list is culled from a couple of sources -- thank you bank rate and frugal living.

If you haven't already scooped up an Easter dress and bonnet - this is the time to find deals on Spring clothes.

Fine china -- now may be the time to buy for that June wedding you're planning to attend. Be sure to check out where the bride and groom are registered. While you're looking at the home goods, peek at the deals on vacuums and cookware at the same time.

In the auto area -- the lists say April is the time to shop for tires and other car care products.

Wallpaper and paint. News has it that as people are Spring cleaning -- they probably need to spruce up their walls. De-clutter then spruce. Frankly, my house is a prime example of this theory. There's a whole lot of 'sprucing' to be done in the weeks ahead.

In the food area: kosher foods, eggs (both chicken-laid and chocolate, along with other Easter-clearance candy), ham, cheese, mustard, cake mixes, frosting and pie crusts.

Enjoy the deals and the shift in seasons.

This just in. Bad economic times have hit close to home for bunnies across the US. Gone are the sweet candies, luscious chocolates and specially designed eggs left behind each year. "People just don't understand the work and expense that goes into each of those stops planned for Sunday, April 12," states Peter T. Rabbit, spokesperson for Bunnies International. "Bunnies have been getting the raw end of the carrot stick for far too long now, and our group is actively seeking bail out funds from the Treasury."

Bunny enthusiasts across this great country are encouraged to reach out to their elected officials and demand that bunnies see some serious cabbage in the next economic bail out package. Or at least some hefty supplies of good chocolate, a wide assortment of jelly beans, good looking baskets and maybe a bonnet or two. Hop to it people. Help a bunny out and have a wonderful April Fool's Day.

Cookbooks. I love cookbooks. I'm in the process of weeding out my collection, and stumbled on some old favorites.... like anything by Ina Garten or Nigella Lawson. Their food, their style -- it's just so inviting. It makes me want to have company. I admit it. I like Rachael Ray, too and I read her magazine every once in a while. They all make me want to have dinner parties. Casual, relaxed dinner parties. BBQ season isn't too far off. Right? Of course that means the perfect recipes, the perfect dish assortment, fun table linens, lovely candles.... You get the idea. I love going out to eat, don't get me wrong. But planning the perfect dinner party and making the details special for people I care about -- that's a special treat, too.

While flipping through Rachael Ray's magazine I saw an article on potato peelers. I admit it -- "Gadget Girl" (AKA: me) was intrigued. But do I really need the Prepara Trio Tri-Blade Peeler? I do love mashed potatoes (ask anyone in my family)... this might need to find its way into my kitchen. Maybe.

Looking good is skin deep

OK... my ongoing theory about 'if you feel good - you look good.' Still works for me. A dear friend gave me a Christmas gift certificate for a relaxing massage at her favorite spa. I hadn't gotten around to using it -- silly, silly me. (Note to self -- never make that mistake again.) I finally made the appointment last week, and that short half hour was pure bliss and relaxation. I could have stayed for four short half hours, but one was a pretty sweet treat.

Best part? I spent the rest of the day feeling relaxed and happy, and I'm thinking it showed. A happy and relaxed Reenie, is a more attractive Reenie. The spa also had a steam room -- so I took advantage of that before showering. Such an amazing treat. This is my new go-to gift for good friends. What an amazing way to get a head start on the weekend.

Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your long hair

Is long hair coming back into vogue? I think it might be. I just read an article that notes Katie Holmes (Cruise) is the true hair trendsetter in this country, and she's letting those locks she cut so short last year grow out (oh, yeah, and has hair extensions to help the look when she's out on the town). The photos they showed of her at a recent event were quite lovely.

I, too, have been letting my hair grow out, and have to admit that I need to overhaul my whole "product" routine. My curly hair needs a completely different set of products when it starts to get longer. I guess you could say that gravity shifts the balance of power, but isn't that always the way??

I use a mismatch of products - never all one brand. A little of this and a little of that, but find that curly hair needs that as it starts to grow out (and when I say "out" - I mean "out").

What do you use to tame your curly hair? What works best for our straight-haired friends? I'm really curious, and am apt to try them all -- so fire away! And let it be known now -- I occasionally indulge in the perfect blow-out for special occasions. A girl needs options.

Staying safe at home

I like to think on the bright side of life. Really, I do. But I'm also a realist. I have a security system in my home. I had it installed 5-6 years ago when I heard about burglaries in my neighborhood. Burglaries, unfortunately, are back in the news.

The system I had installed is almost wireless, but it will stay with the house when I move -- that's what it's meant to do. I thought it was pretty high tech back a few years ago when they first put it in and and walked me through the instructions. Recently, I read about this great new system that's available for renters (or for homeowners that don't want to drill lines, etc): called SimpliSafe. It's wireless and it's linked to an emergency dispatch center. Best of all -- when you move, you take it with you. It's portable security. Don't get me wrong -- I love the system I have. I love that it was there when my daughter was younger and home alone in the early evening. This seems like a great alternative for people who may be renting or contemplating a move in the short term. A nice happy, safe medium.

Look good -- feel good

So, my New Year's resolution about that pesky weight thing... Well, let's just say that the weight is winning that one. Am I eating better? Yes, a little. But it's the exercise side of my life that needs a jump start. I've started my annual ritual of cleaning out closets and dresser drawers and my fitness pieces are jumping out at me. "Jumping" because they're cute and appealing? Uhh, no, not so much. Mostly because they're boring and uninspiring. Sometimes I just wonder what I might have been thinking...

To my rescue -- a press announcement that Cheryl Burke from Dancing with the Stars fame is launching a new exercise line. My new theory? If you look good when working out -- you'll feel even better. Right? In any case -- I think she's great. And I know there are other celebs out there with similar lines (in case Cheryl isn't your cup of tea). So, my humble advice: find the gear that makes you feel like a million bucks (but doesn't cost a million) and spend some time outside (or at your fave gym) getting your heart rate up a bit. Make sure that gear includes shoes/sneaks that make your feet feel good and offer the support you need. A healthy heart is a heart that lasts longer (and happier), and that's a good thing.

She's come a long way in 50 years

You love her. You don't love her. If nothing else -- she is an icon and you will always remember her. Of whom do I speak? Barbie, of course. Mattel introduced her at the New York Toy Fair on March 9, 1959 and she's been making news ever since. She's 50 this week, and that's making headlines around the world.

I had Barbie dolls. My daughter had Barbie dolls (perhaps, still has a few tucked away in a box in our attic), and they were always a big part of her play dates with other young girls. What I loved? That my daughter and her friends concocted great stories about the lives of these dolls. Any toy that sparks creative time and story telling gets a good grade from me.

I understand that during Barbie Millicent Roberts' birthday week (March 9-14) some retailers are selling Souvenir $3 Bathing Suit Barbie (R) -- the price charged for a Barbie back in 1959. It might be worth scooping one up. Who knows where she'll be in 2059 and what this 2009 souvenir edition might be worth.

Well, it's the beginning of the month... that time when I like to gather tips and tidbits from a variety of sources to help us all save money. Big news for the month: March is the best time to get a deal on a new TV (thank you Real Simple and my daughter's friend who works for a large electronics retailer). Why you ask? Well, it's time to make space for all of the new models that were introduced in January. Second best time to buy a new TV? The day after Thanksgiving.

Others tips for the month? According to bankrate.com, March is the best time to buy windbreakers and raincoats, new luggage, gardening tools and frozen food. There must be a correlation here, but I'm not seeing it yet. In any case, I know a lot of people itching to get out into their gardens. New gardening tools might make Spring and Summer seem that much closer. New luggage might mean you just have to get away for a weekend. Even a local Inn would be a nice change of pace. All the better if you can save some cash when treating yourself.

And, finally, not so much a savings tip, but a reminder: we spring forward this weekend (for daylight savings time). I don't know about you, but I use this weekend's clock-changing chore as a reminder to replace batteries in all of my smoke detectors. I hope you do the same.

I'm not sure where I stumbled upon this item, but I've been giddy (yes, I know I get giddy when it comes to gadgets -- I'm trying to get help). In any case, this little goodie from Craftsman Tools is an automatic hammer (the Craftsman Nextec Hammerhead Auto Hammer, to be exact) . Say what? How do they do that? I thought I had to be a builder to have this much fun. Will this little darling save you any money? Maybe not tons, but for those of us who face depth-perception challenges -- it may save a manicure or five. It puts nails in their place with the press of a trigger. It even has a magnetic head to hold the little buggers in place when you're selecting just the perfect spot. Perfect housewarming gift for your favorite gadget girl or guy. I'm just saying...

Saving money at the grocery store -- is it possible?

I don't know about you, but I'm constantly amazed at the grand total that pops up when I'm checking out at the grocery store. It just doesn't seem possible.

I read an interesting tip in the current Real Simple magazine. It says if you want to save money at the grocery store -- look everywhere except at eye level. More expensive brand names tend to be positioned at eye level (in fact, some companies pay "slotting fees" for that privilege). Find the more affordable versions above and below eye level. Who knew? I'm going to test the theory out this weekend. Let me know if you've had luck with this strategy.

I've been hearing about this website... this site that lets you sign up for weather alerts. It's simple, it straightforward -- it answers the question: "Do I need an umbrella today?" I logged on this afternoon and I'm hoping for my first text alert in the morning.

Best for those of us who go to the trouble of straightening our hair. I don't know about you, but nothing makes me feel more like I wasted time than if I straighten my curly locks -- only to have them get wet and curly before the day is out.

The site is great, too, for folks, like my daughter, who ALWAYS carry an umbrella in their bag for 'just in case' moments. I don't know about you, but I'm hoping to carry smaller bags as I get older, not bigger ones.

So, if you want to check it out, visit umbrellatoday.com. I tried typing in my zip code and found that I needed to use the more central one for my city, not my outlying one. It does ask for your cell phone number (so please don't be surprised -- your umbrella report comes via text message). Theoretically I will start knowing tomorrow morning and every day thereafter if I need my umbrella.

What colors look best on you?

I had breakfast with a dear friend the other day. She looked beautiful. I mean she's always been an attractive woman, but she was sparkling, and all before 9:30 in the morning. (I looked more like a lone 30 watt bulb trying to light up a warehouse.) I wasn't sure what was different, so I asked her. (I've known her that long -- so not awkward at all.) She told me about this great service she had found. She had her colors done. Before you groan and say that is so 1980s -- hear me out. (By the way, I groaned inside when she said it, but, given her appearance, was intrigued enough to listen). She went to her color analyst and walked away with new make-up, but even more importantly, a small, easy-to-fit-in-your-purse portfolio of color swatches that were her best picks when selecting clothing. It was working for her. Seriously working for her. The simple blue scarf she had around her neck was part of the sparkling process.

Guess what? I've made my appointment and have convinced another pal to join me. I'm going to use the new swatch tool in my bi-annual closet cleaning ritual. Every late March, cold-weather clothes get moved to my storage closet and get replaced with warm-weather clothes from that same storage closet. The colors that don't 'fit' me are getting a one-way ticket to my local consignment shop. The pal who plans to join me says she is going to use the tool to go shopping while there are so many sales going on. I could be convinced to do that too. Go ahead, twist my arm.

At Home - Inside and Out

I have home projects on the brain this week. I am not a gardener, but long to have beautiful flowers and plants outside. Trouble is I seem to have a black thumb and most things I select die slow, painful deaths. So, I've kind of given up. Well, turns out I might not have to. I just heard about this new product -- it's been all over the media in the last couple of weeks. It's called the EasyBloom Plant Sensor. It's a gadget that precisely monitors sun, soil, temperature and humidity conditions in the place you want to add a plant. It will tell you if you're over-watering or under-watering. Whether the plant needs different light or soil conditions. You plug it into the soil you're considering for 24 hours. Then you plug it into the USB port on your computer and it gives you the scoop on your soil, and even suggests the best plants for that plot of land. This black thumb may turn green after all...

I love Spring and the first visit to the garden center to pick up new stuff -- imagine how much more fun it could be if you knew the things you purchased would make it through the whole season.

Speaking of an item that has been in the media -- this one, too. For inside. It is the coolest ice tray I have ever seen. It's a vertical ice tray from Fusionbrands -- called the iceorb. Take out the inner bucket and fill the outer bucket with water... then replace the inner bucket so the water heads for the 21 pre-formed cubes. Easy to pop the ice out when you're ready. Store your cubes in the bucket, or use the inside as a chilling place for wine, fruit, dip, etc. Perfect addition as you start thinking about more outdoor entertaining. Yes, I know we have a few more long weeks until Spring, but a girl can dream of lovely parties on her deck, right? I can't wait to spruce up the deck (needs a good power wash and coat or 10, yes, I meant to say 10, of sealant). Some new deck furniture wouldn't be bad either... and from what I understand, this is a good time to start thinking about those things if you need them.

American Heart Month

It's Fitness Friday (and the day before Valentine's Day), and I thought it would be appropriate to remind folks that February is American Heart Month. I've always wondered how months get named or turned into celebrations, so I did a little digging.

Here's what I found on this particular event:

Cardiovascular disease, including stroke, are our nation's No. 1 killer. To urge Americans to join the battle against these diseases, since 1963 Congress has required the president to proclaim February "American Heart Month."

Why include this info here? Well, I was recently approached by a dear friend's daughter who was fundraising for the American Heart Association this month because she recently lost her Grandmother to heart disease. My friend, and his daughter, suffered a direct loss and they're doing something about it from a research-support standpoint.

But - as individuals - we can choose to do the same, and/or we can choose to be in charge of our bodies, and do the things that make us healthier -- even if our genetics seem stacked against us.

Are you exercising regularly - either at home or a local fitness center? (February, by the way, is a great time to look at gyms.)

Are you making food choices that support healthy heart guidelines? It doesn't mean you can't eat out again -- it means you need to learn tips and strategies for how to enjoy your restaurant outings while also taking care of your heart health. Auto Daze with our Presidents

I have to tell you... I'm getting that 'I want a new car' itch. I'm not quite ready to pull the trigger, but feel like I would be remiss in not mentioning with our upcoming Presidents' Day Holiday so close by -- as that is where, in my mind, the new car fun begins every year.

I have a lot of different cars on my must-test-drive list, but thought given the nature of this blog, I should focus on cars that can save you money from an energy standpoint (but also have you consider the tax implications when comparing models).

Consumer Reports rates the most fuel efficient vehicles in two categories (cars and SUVs). Here they are:

Most fuel-efficient cars and their overall mileage

Toyota Prius Base (44 mpg)

Toyota Prius Touring (42 mpg)

Smart for Two Passion (39 mpg)

Most fuel efficient SUVs and their overall mileage

Subaru Forester 2.5x (MT) (24 mpg)

Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited (24 mpg)

Toyota RAV4 (base, 4cyl) (23 mpg)

The Consumer Report chart also notes the average gas mileage over a 150 mile trip. Those numbers tend to be significantly higher than the overall number shown here.

The other thing to keep in mind when determining whether an alternative vehicle will save you money -- is the associated tax credit (when still available). The IRS has a long chart on how to determine if a credit is available for your new car (and it must be new to qualify), and how much the credit is worth (determined by your purchase date). The whole qualifying system seems a bit complicated, so best to check the IRS chart when making your savings calculations.

Valentine's Day for HER!

No matter who the "her" is... Valentine's Day is always one of those hard days to do right. You may be buying for your Nana, your Mom, your spouse/partner, newly found girlfriend or even a daughter or granddaughter. Maybe even the person you intend to marry (hello jewelry store). And somehow, they all have different expectations on Valentine's Day.

There are the perennial favorites: candy, flowers, jewelry and dinner out. I remember the first time I had flowers delivered to me from a beau -- I won't lie -- it was pretty cool.

But creativity would be a good thing, too.

I just stumbled upon this version of a bouquet. Yes, perhaps more than you want to spend, but what a cool idea. Flowers and productivity -- all rolled into one. As those who read often know -- I do have an inner Geek that needs feeding every once in a while. (This little cutie is presented by HP... it's the HP Mini Vivienne Tam edition.)

Speaking of creativity... how about a gift certificate entitling the Valentine girl to a new coat of paint in her bedroom. Maybe a spa weekend for the both of you while that work is getting done?

OK, I admit it... I have 'dining out' on the brain. Do you hear me Saint Valentine? It's that time of year when we think about how to treat someone special -- be it on February 14 or any other day. Maybe it's because we lived through the stress of the holidays, and we just need a break and a special treat for ourselves.

Whatever the reason, I found this news from the National Restaurant Association very interesting. The hot new trends for 2009 seem great to me.

The top five:

Locally grown produce

Bite-size/mini desserts

Organic produce

Nutritionally balanced children's dishes

New/fabricated cuts of meat (e.g. Denver steak, pork flat iron, bone-in Tuscan veal chop)

So... if you happen to be in charge of making Valentines' Day special for someone you know -- you might want to think about these things as you plan that special night out. Be adventurous. Try something new. And if you can make it affordable and fun -- all the better.

Fashion Friday: What's hot for Spring/Summer 2009?

It's mid-January and I'm having those typical Spring-Summer-would-feel-awfully-nice-right-about-now blues. So, I decided to do a little web surfing to picture what I'll be wearing in a few months. Goodbye sweaters and warm coats... hello fashion trends for the new season.
Seriously, I'm not a fashionista, but I like to keep current... so my daughter doesn't wrinkle her nose every time I get dressed. OK, she will always 'wrinkle.' but I can pretend that I know what's going on.

Look for these things:

The Butterfly motif. This one scares me. Really. The big thing about the butterfly motif -- don't overdo. Don't be too girly. Apparently designers like Diana von Furstenberg and Badgley Mischka had butterflies on their 2009 catwalks.

Single-shouldered dresses, tops, bikini tops. Kind of an interesting trend. Asymmetrical seems to be in. I know some people who will feel unbalanced. I might be one of them.

The Grecian or Romanesque trend. Grecian trend meet the single-shouldered trend. It all makes sense to me now. I can't finish writing this without mentioning a toga party. It would just be wrong.

Fringe and flapper trend. A lot of skirts/dresses (short or long) sported this trend on the 2009 Spring/Summer runways. This one I can do.

See-through and sheer fabrics. Again, not so much for me, but the info I read said that it was more about being stylish than playing the part of the sex-kitten. Maybe even cooler to wear(temperature-wise) - could this be the fashion world's nod to the keeping-it-green movement?

And finally, black and white seems to be the trend for 2009. Phew... I'm going to be OK.

Amazon names top selling products for 2008

So, I heard recently that Amazon published their their top selling products for 2008. I was curious and checked them out. Two items jumped out at me -- maybe because I'm in that winter homebody mode....

They noted the Oster 4207 electric wine opener. I get it... wine was probably a big gift for the 2008 holiday season and the wine opener made a nice 'extra.' I checked the model out on the Oster site and can see how this baby has legs in the gift-giving area. Though I have to admit... I find it pretty satisfying when a cork is pulled from a bottle just right. It says having this will allow me more time with guests. Not so sure on that, but it will definitely make me look way more cool in front of guests (as my bottle opening skills leave a lot to be desired). I'd love to see one in action. Local kitchen store -- here I come.

The other item... and this one makes tons of sense this time of year: First Alert CO600 plug-in carbon monoxide alarm. I was a little confused about it being a "plug-in," but just confirmed that it has a battery back up. Now I get it.
What made this listing even more important to me? I just completed a survey from my state's Department of Health and Human Services and they made a point of asking if I had one of these. That question right up there with the major life/health questions on heart disease and diabetes. When I hung up... I put the item on my shopping list. Then, voila, here it is on the Amazon list. Someone is definitely trying to send me a message. I get it -- message received! Keeping my family safe and healthy really does top my list of needs in 2009.

Fitness Friday

Have you ever had a hard time sticking with something? A commitment? A new resolution? Sometimes the "accessories" make the idea of it way more fun than the reality, but I think I've found something that might actually merge the two, and make the new goal more attainable. OK, I'll stop writing in code. I stumbled on this a couple of months ago, but it was today, while thinking about my daughter's idea to learn how to snowboard (and to take me with her) that I thought this stuff might be a really cool addition to the idea of learning.

Have you heard about this new active wear? It actually includes shock absorbing material inside the design. You don't end up looking like a kid with pillows tied to her backside, but you end up with some protection for that rather delicate and aging backside all the same.

It's called Armadillo Scooterwear and it's "designed with the modern scooter rider in mind including scooter jackets, classic trench coats, hooded jackets and scooter gloves, all of our collection features d30 (TM) body armour, just in case you need it." Imagine... clothing that looks stylish and protects you if you take a fall. Apparently the material is soft and flexible, but when impacted at high speed offers shock absorption. This could be an amazing find for the gravity-inclined like me. I know they say 'made for the scooter-rider,' but as I'm more often in a car... figure it has to offer more protection than the average jacket or pants. I've even read that the inventor, Richard Palmer, cracks his knee with a shovel (while wearing the stuff) to prove to non-believers that it really does work. That's commitment (and maybe this side of crazy).

Winter fun

So, it may be cold where you are. You may even have snow, and if you don't, you may be making plans to travel someplace that does have snow. With that in mind... allow me to introduce two new winter must-haves. OK, maybe just one must-have and one 'wouldn't-that-be-fun-to-have.'

The Porsche sled. Yes, I said Porsche. Who needs a plastic saucer or toboggan? This baby will scream 'style' when you swoosh down the nearest hill. The Porsche site calls it a "sledge" -- am I missing something or did they? In any case... it has an aluminum frame with stainless steel runners. These gloves allow you to flip back caps to expose both your thumb and index fingers... so you can use your electronic devices without exposing your whole hand. Magnets keep the caps out of your way. Looks like they come in fleece, stretch or leather... ranging from $20-$40 -- in case that sled seems a little, shall I say, "steep"?

Typical January sales

I don't know about you, but I have this lingering memory of January white sales. Do other people remember those? I even remember buying my new college towels/linens/blankets/pillows in the January of my Senior year of High School because that's when the sales were. That memory, dear readers, is nearly 25 years old. For some odd reason it just sticks in my head.

So, with that in mind, I decided to do a little research on what is typically on sale during the month of January. As we all have heard, holiday sales figures were not where most retailers wanted them to be, so plenty more might be on sale in this particular January.

Resolutions

I heard this morning on TV that the top resolutions are always about money and health. And guess what? They top my list.

On the health front: eat better, exercise more, lose weight.

On the money front: be smarter about money, pay off debt, save more, plan for retirement.

I did some reading for this post and found that the top stories seem to be about how to make the resolutions stick. Most articles talked about being specific; being realistic and making a commitment to check back on the specific goals. With that in mind... I need to add more specificity to my resolutions: add a vegetable or legume to four dinner meals each week; walk on Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons; create a meal plan geared to losing 1.5 pounds per week; research before making purchases and find ways to save money before each purchase (that is after truly defining the need for the purchase); add x dollars to my monthly car payment each month to pay it off 1 year early; automatically deduct x dollars from my checking account on the 20th of each month and send percentages of that money to both my retirement fund and my savings account. You get the idea...

Phew... that feels more concrete.

But the best story I found was on adding your resolutions to the confetti streamers released in Time Square on New Year's Eve. Talk about commitment. (Most of the stories I read did mention writing the resolutions down and sharing them with friends and family. This idea takes that to a whole new level.)

All you have to do is visit the Times Square Information Center and add your resolutions to the Wishing Wall. Those resolutions will be added to the confetti pieces that are set adrift at the midnight ball drop. Find the Times Square Information Center at 1560 Broadway (between 46th and 47th Streets). If you are not in NYC, add your resolution online at the Wishing Wall site.

I am a self-realized Geek. I admit it. Working on this list has made me near giddy. SO many fun gadgets -- I had to scale myself down a notch just to be able to include some non-gadget ideas.

This first idea could work for all ages of "him." And I know it would make me giggle with delight on Christmas morning. How about a pair of the Eyeclops Night Vision Goggles? The possibilities are endless!

Co-worker gifts

This category is hard. Depending on the size of your work environment -- this could be a huge commitment. I think it's great to come up with a theme that you can duplicate -- there is no shame in giving the same trinket to multiple co-workers -- and you can mix it up within the theme (this will make more sense as you keep reading). One word of advice: if you have a close relationship with one or two of your co-workers, and you want to do something more for them than for others in your office, do it 'offline' (AKA: away from the office).

This list may feel random... but it's long to give you plenty of options.

Stuff connected to work

How about a cool calendar? This is where theme could be fun... calendar for each person, but each different to match the personality.
Fun mouse pad. Get something pre-made or consider customizing. Many local stores offer this option.
Hot new business book on a subject they really enjoy or use in their job (here's to hoping it fits both categories!!).
Gift cards for local coffee establishments or lunch spots.

Gifts for home

A fun bottle of wine. If you are feeling especially creative, some companies allow you to customize wine labels.
Hand-crafted soap or hand cream. Can't go wrong with a holiday scent.
Lovely jar of jam (see this in hostess gifts, too). I love getting jams, mustards and other goodies I don't usually splurge on for myself. Extra points if they are locally made.
Homemade goodies in beautiful (re-usable) containers. I make a mean batch of chocolate/craisin/peanut candy. Of course, I make an extra batch for my own house.
A magazine subscription. I've noticed lots of bo-go ("buy one-get one") deals this year.
A handcrafted ornament. Again on that theme idea. (You can get multiples of a type, but all can be slightly different.)

One final idea... maybe forgo a gift altogether and make a donation to a local charity, school or school sports team, local arts organization or park in the name of your department.

Gifts for HER!

Okay... this post is for those needing to buy a gift for a loved one (or not so loved one, but important, nonetheless) of the female persuasion.
This list is sort of rambling. I've tried for the last few months to keep my eyes on some new products -- to add to the regular line-up of great ideas to get you through this very delicate process.

Pampering
Did I hear someone say spa, or for the more budget conscious -- how about manicure or pedicure? I love nothing more than having a few moments of personal pampering, and as I try to streamline my life, this is one experiential gift that makes my body forever grateful; not to mention my nail beds.

Keeping Warm
OK... a new coat would be dandy, but if that's not in your budget... how about a lovely merino wool wrap. It's the kind of gift that screams "hug" during the cold winter (especially if her office happens to be cold or she finds herself on lots of chilly airplanes). There's a great company in Maine that creates gorgeous scarves and wraps (Swans Island Blankets), but my guess is that there are plenty of local companies offering luxurious options as well.

Personal Beauty
I've been hearing great things about MAC Pro Eye Makeup remover. No kidding. Apparently it's all the rage with models because the cucumber extract spares your skin the irritation that some removers cause. Could be a great addition to a Christmas stocking (I mean Santa might need a little help, right??).

Making Memories
A nod to the Geek in me. I LOVE the Flip Video camera. It's super intuitive, and what a great gift around holiday time. You'll be recording those festive morning moments in no time.

Yummy Treats
On a recent trip to the left coast (also known as California)... I stumbled upon salt-topped chocolate caramels. Who knew salt and chocolate together could really work?? I've already sent them as gifts to family and friends.

Oh, and Stonewall Kitchen products can make even the most novice cook seem like a world-class chef. Pair a great sauce with some beautiful kitchen accessories and lovely linen kitchen towels, and, voila, you've made that budding cook feel 'specialista.'

A Fool for Traveling
I love to travel, and I'm a sucker for a great bag (be it carry-on or check-able size). If the woman in your life is doing a fair amount or travel -- make her day easier with a bag that fits her travel needs (think laptop carriers and where they are located on that carry-on piece; being slowed down in security fighting with your bag to release your laptop can be a a real drag). How about adding a monogram or something else that helps her easily identify said new luggage in a sea of black bags...

Perfume. You can't go wrong with perfume. Enough said.

Bright and shiny
There's always jewelry, but as my daughter has reminded me more than once, you can go wrong with the wrong jewelry. If you don't know her taste -- don't guess. It's that simple. Tackle this category with some trepidation, but if you know her style -- you really could make her day! Better still, if she has a favorite local jeweler stop by and see if she has left any not-so-subtle hints with her fave sales reps.

If you’ve not shopped online before it might feel like a scary experience. But there are some steps you can take to feel better about your next online shopping trip.

Know Who The Seller Is
If I’m ordering from a new company…I try to check out reviews or search for any news stories about their reputation. I also like to know their physical address and phone number.

Using a credit card makes it safer
When you use your credit card to pay you have the legal right to dispute charges made to your card. This applies to items that have not been received or misrepresented, but also works for charges you did not authorize in the first place (the main reason checking your statement every month is so important).

Single-use and substitute credit card numbers
Check if your credit card company offers single-use or substitute card numbers meant specifically for online shopping. It allows you to use your credit card without exposing your real account number online. Not all credit card issuers offer this option, but it’s worth checking out if it will give you more peace of mind.

Keep good records
It’s always a good idea to print out or save a digital copy of your online order receipt. Make sure all of the information you need is on the page. I keep a special folder in my email program for online shopping and keep any emailed receipts in that folder until my transaction is complete, in addition to making digital copies of the receipts I see during the online order process.

The devil is in the details
Before you click that final “Submit Order” button, make sure you check all of the details. Check that the item description, know the delivery charge, the total cost, the delivery timeline, the return and refund policy and how customer service works.

Security checks
When you are on a retail page where you need to provide payment information make sure the address line changes from an “http” to a “https” or “shttp.” The addition of that “s” lets you know that the page is secure. Understand, too, how the seller will safeguard your personal information during the sale and after. Most sites have a link to that information. If you don’t see one…contact the seller for more information.

Cool Hostess Gifts

I have a few holiday parties to attend between now and mid-January. I'm always on the lookout for interesting hostess gifts (and these gifts can apply to some other people on your holiday list, too).

Candles
Can't go wrong with a candle. But I think a locally-made one is even more special. Check your community for artisans making hand-crafted candles.

Candies
How about a lovely box of chocolates from a local candy maker.

Jams, jellies and other specialty food items
These are the kinds of things I never buy for myself..or, at least, feel guilty when I do. I love having a special jam in my fridge for the holidays...makes Christmas morning toast even more fun. Or a special mustard dresses up sandwiches made with holiday meal leftovers.

Spices
Another one of those items that feels like a personal indulgence. What about a basket or a tea towel holding 3-4 tins of beautifully-fresh spices from a local spice company. Some of my spice jars could date back to just-out-of-college which, trust me, makes them way too old!

Travel ideas
If you have a special connection to your host, and know travel is in their immediate future...what about some travel guides for their Spring vacation destination.

Hand lotion or dishwashing soap
How about a lovely scented dishwashing soap - maybe even something from the more-green category. Also - this time of year...hands get dry and chapped, especially if you are the hostess and doing lots of prep work. Pamper them with a luxurious hand cream. Wrap them in a pretty holiday dish towel to keep with the theme.

Toast them well
Wine or champagne is always a lovely gift, and I think a handwritten note on the bottle makes the gift even more special. Your hosts will know who to raise their glass to -- after the party is over. Don't forget great coffees and teas, too. These beverages make lovely gifts as well. I also love cute cocktail napkins -- consider including with your special bottle.

A word about flowers...
They are beautiful and a beautiful hostess gift, but I recommend sending them ahead of the party so your hostess doesn't have to drop everything and arrange a bouquet when you arrive. Send them the day before, and you can save your host/hostess a decorating task the day of the party.

Save some cash...save the planet

I started decorating my house the day after turkey day. I've been like a little kid waiting to do it. The lights just make me happy....what can I say?

Speaking of lights...think about picking up new LED lights for your home-decorating needs. LED bulbs use a fraction of the wattage of regular old-holiday bulbs and they last longer too! Many retailers offer special savings on these holiday must-haves.

Consider using old newspapers and magazines for wrapping some gifts. Save the special wrapping for those extra-special gifts. Wrap just three presents with your own recycled paper and help make a big impact on the environment. Better yet…get complementary gifts to hold other gifts…think oven mitt for new kitchen utensils, or a beautiful jewelry box for new earrings.

Use natural, found-in-nature accessories to dress up packages…like a fir tree bough or a sprig of holly (just be sure to only use if pets and small children can’t get near them). Saves on tossed ribbon. Again, some packages will always need ribbon to feel special, but mix it up and have fun and help the environment at the same time.

Consider cutting down on clutter, and buy “experience-gifts” instead of things. How about a family four-pack to an indoor amusement center or a family membership to the local Children’s Museum? Does someone special in your life love to golf…how about a golf membership at your local course?

Make the world wide web your best savings-tool. Comparison shop online and make sure to check for bargains on various saver sites. Always make sure you factor in shipping and handling costs if you buy online.

It's that time of year...time when families get together and tons of pictures are taken -- video, too. But remember when your family didn't have that spanky digital camera or camcorder, and your family memories lived on slides? I remember, boy do I remember, and I have the boxes of my Dad's old slides to prove it. I just stumbled upon this new product, and though I have not yet gotten one for myself -- felt I should share it with you. Especially with the end-of-year holidays charging into full swing. This way if Aunt Eileen starts reminiscing about that Christmas dinner from years ago -- you might just be able to show it to her on your laptop, or better yet, knock her socks off when you present her with a framed print of that special day.

Dressing for the Holidays

OK...I know this is where I am supposed to talk about the 'LBD,' right? Well, I happen to live in a cold climate, and find that the LBD ('little back dress' to the uninitiated) can be hard when the temps drop below freezing. I, for one, am all about tailored black slacks, perfect party shoes, and fun tops (OK, perfect party shoes sometimes have to be replaced by bulky boots - but only while in transport-to-the-event mode). I figure this way...if I have multiple events to attend, I can just have one or two go-to black slacks hanging in my closet and a variety of tops. I tend toward tunic tops and jacket type models. I think I look stylish, and I'm not feeling the need to purchase multiple LBDs -- typically more expensive than jewel-toned and sparkly tops (think beautiful evening sweaters, too). I also find that I can mix them up, even year-to-year, and I'm not having that dreaded "have I worn this in front of this group of people before?" question popping into my head.

If the LBD is your thing -- I urge you to find one that fits perfectly and that makes you feel like a million bucks. Though I did just read an article that red dresses tend to make you more "attractive" to members of the opposite sex -- so much more attractive that male dates may actually feel inclined to spend more money on you. So if more attention (and more generosity) is what you're after -- changing from LBD to LRD may be your best bet. Decisions, decisions...

Food Safety Over Thanksgiving

I will never forget a large family gathering a number of years back. I was the only healthy person at the table, yet the hostess insisted on cooking the full-blown meal. Needless to say, I was a little concerned about what I might "catch" from eating the lovely meal. Thankfully - I remained healthy (and the rest of the group 'mended' quickly), but that memory got me thinking about my own upcoming holiday feast (I will be hosting my very small family for Thanksgiving), and how I should pay careful attention to all of those food safety tips we all hear about. Thanksgiving is all about the bird - and we all know there are some specific rules for dealing with uncooked poultry.

Packing the right way

So, for a girl with an avowed passion for great suitcases (all bags, really, ask anyone in my family)... I pack like a true novice. I have friends who can pack a carry-on for a week in Europe. I need the same space for my toiletries and shoes. I've had to do more travel lately, and am facing holiday travel in the coming weeks. Thought I might pay better attention to both the better-packing-info I've been reading and the aforementioned friend who packs like a pro.

Things I'm learning:

Size does matter. Be sure your airline carry-on is the real deal. I have a bag that I thought was the right size, but found out the hard way that it's just a teense too big to qualify for carry-on status. If you are planning on bringing your cherished possessions onto the plane -- choose the 22" carry-on when shopping for your next suitcase. But I do recommend checking your carrier's Web site for their specific rules for carry-on luggage. Oh, and for the record, if it doesn't have wheels -- it's not coming with me.

Use all of the space. If you are bringing shoes...use the space in the shoes to tuck socks or any other small items.

The dreaded liquid diet. I have always had a hard time with packing toiletries. Now that we have the security limitations - I'm even worse. One big word of advice. It is very likely - OK, maybe not every time, but most times - that where you are heading will have shampoo, liquid soap, etc. Be sure you check current airline carry-on regulations when packing your security-area-baggie. Check this site for up-to-date information on what and how much can go into your carry-on.

Just like science class -- heavy falls to the bottom. Put your heavy items in first - whether they are things or clothing items. If you are traveling for work -- put the notebooks in first. BUT if you need the heavy stuff upon arrival - you may need to adjust this rule.

Plan ahead for those items you pick up on the other side. Do you have an easy-to-stow smaller bag to tuck into your suitcase in case you need another bag for the return flight? If not - I suggest checking them out now -- while you have time. Nothing worse than having to buy a bag you don't really want or need just because you're in a jam. Shop for the one you really want and like.

Plastic surgery doesn't help these wrinkles. If you want to reduce wrinkles while traveling, place old dry cleaner bags between layers of your clothes. It doesn't completely prevent the wrinkles, but it helps. Plus, I like having them on the return trip to keep dirty clothes separated from the clean pieces.

Roll and fold. Best to roll soft items like jersey knit or flannel (picture your PJs); but fold pants and more substantial shirts.

I know my community has a great travel shop with super ideas/items for helping you pack. There are great online retailers, too. If air travel is in your immediate future... I recommend checking these out. Local department/discount stores also offer great options. A little planning now will help your packing process go far more smoothly. And we all need one less hassle during the holiday season. Right?

Make Your Home Safe

OK…it’s that time of year when I start realizing that safety at home is a big deal. Why is that? It gets cooler, the time changes and I start using my fireplace. I’m reminded, too, that I’ll have more people in and out of my home during the holidays and I want all of them to be safe.

Here are a few of my thoughts:

When I change my clocks – I change the batteries in my smoke detectors. Sure, the battery would probably last more than six months, but changing the clock is a great reminder, and I can spare a battery or two for this peace of mind.

If you have a fireplace – make sure you have your chimney cleaned. I’ve driven by far too many homes with chimney fires to feel any other way about this.

Make sure you have your furnace cleaned and serviced on a prescribed schedule. I think it’s usually based on gallons of oil burned, but I make it an annual event. It’s a recurring task in my PDA. It’s a quick way to make sure everything is working OK, and it helps with fuel efficiency.

I don’t use a space heater, but I have family members who do, and I always get nervous because I know I’m not disciplined enough to use one. Yes, I know other people are – I just know myself. Please, please, if you use a space heater in your home – be careful and use only as directed.

Candles. I love them and I especially love having holiday-scented ones around this time of year, but, again, back to the discipline thing. I’m also concerned when I use them because I have inquisitive pets. Keep everyone in your house in mind when you light candles.

Finally – do you have a fire extinguisher in your home? Please, if you don’t, get one now.
I’m sure this will be an ongoing list, but these are the ones that are top of mind for me right now. As always – please add your thoughts in the comments section.

My November horoscope said to start my holiday shopping early

I have started. I actually stood in line at a local store this past weekend to buy a Wii Fit for my college-aged daughter. I was FIRST in line, and expect Mother-of-the-year status to be bestowed upon me on December 26. I think they only had six or seven of the games, so I feel sorry for all of those other Moms behind me in line.

I only have the one child and have known that the Wii Fit was her big desire for the last few months, but it got me thinking about those Christmas shopping trips of years ago – when I’d need to know the top toys.
I recently found the Toys”R”Us Fabulous 15 list of hot toys for 2008. I’m ashamed to say I’ve never heard of some of these items, but then again, my 19 year old has outgrown most of them (but her Wii Fit did make the list).

Holiday Shopping in a Bad Economy

I’m guilty. I left my holiday shopping to the end of the year, and now, with the current economic crisis hitting every headline I see, I’m getting a little worried about how to make the holidays special for those I normally treat with gifts. I’m not ready to forego holiday gift-giving altogether, so below find my plan on shopping smarter this year:

-Make a list and a budget. This may be an oldie, but it sure is a goodie. Your list should include the people you want to buy gifts for, the extra you will spend on food and beverages with visitors dropping by, holiday decorations, extra travel, holiday card purchases, even postage. Your list needs to be full of detail if you’re going to make the idea of sticking to a budget work. Once you determine what you can afford for each person – stick to that amount. I know it’s hard, but it’s the only way you can protect your savings. No one wants to be paying off holiday debt in June.

-Research deals online. If you can buy discounted gift certificates from local merchants, do it. This is your money we’re talking about. Know what things costs and where the best deals are before you even leave your house. The Internet can really be your friend in this process. But you knew that already!

-Sales are only valuable if you were going to buy the item to begin with. If you were not planning on needing that cute new pair of gloves, you just spent more than you should have. Just because it’s on sale, does not make it a bargain for your wallet.

-Know return/exchange policies BEFORE you buy. If you’re buying gifts it’s important to know this. Many retailers offer gift receipts… I encourage you to keep them or even enclose them with the gift. It makes everyone’s life a lot easier in the long run, and if an item gets discounted after you bought it… your recipient still gets the full value of what you spent, as opposed to the new discounted price.

-Avoid my biggest mistake while holiday shopping. What is it you ask? Buying for myself. That’s what it is. I recommend putting off personal purchases until after the holiday season. You’ll know exactly where your budget stands, and you’ll reap the benefits of after-holiday markdowns.

Most important this holiday season: try to minimize stress. Be true to yourself on what your budget can allow. This season is about togetherness, family times and good cheer. Try to enjoy those parts above all else.

Getting Your Home Ready for the Holidays

It’s hard to imagine that holidays will be here soon, but soon it will be! If you’re hosting your family or local friends for any of the major November and December holidays, you might want to start planning now for any furniture or room upgrades. Keep in mind that some furniture can take six-eight weeks to order, so plan now to be ready to roll out the Christmas feast on that new dining room set. If you need to do some interior upgrades…plan now on what you need, so you have plenty of time to fit the work in -- whether you do it yourself or hire a professional. Think new paint, new cushions or other accent pieces to spruce up your home.

No time for major upgrades? No extra cash for new furniture? You can make a room look completely different by changing where furniture is placed. And don’t just think about the furniture already in the room you're tackling. You have your whole home to explore. It’s amazing how many pieces can be re-purposed and make a room come to life in a whole new way. Adding some new angles and some new color accents can be a great way to refresh a tired room.

Is your home ready for overnight guests? Keep in mind, when we live in our homes day in and day out we stop noticing the piled up clutter. If you know you’ll be hosting people over the upcoming holidays, take a walk around your house, but pretend you are seeing it for the first time. I know it sounds hard, but just try to see what your guests might see and tackle those clutter-filled areas FIRST.

If you have a guest room, really focus on that area. Make it an oasis for the people who will be staying with you. Be sure you have great linens and that things smell fresh and clean -- bring on the Bounce or your favorite fabric softener. Collect all of those sample product bottles you’ve been storing up and make a welcome basket for guests (we all forget to pack at least one essential when we travel). Guests staying a while? Stop by your local Convention and Visitors Bureau and pick up area walking maps and activity brochures… you might also find some great ideas for you and your family -- for when the guests are gone.

There's nothing good to eat
Everyone eats differently, and gets hungry at different times. Think about creating a healthy-snack area in your kitchen and let guests know where it is. Heck, let your family know, too. You never know who might have a late-night munchie attack.

Whatever you do -- keep breathing

Don't let the holiday season make you crazy. Keep up on the daily clutter before it become a week-sized mess. Empty the dishwasher when it's done. Toss unnecessary mail in the recycle bin before it lands on a desk. Most important: keep BREATHING! In. Out. In. Out. That's it.

Halloween Planning

Halloween is on Friday night this year. Are you ready? There's plenty to do before All Hallows Eve is upon us. Don't let it make you crazy. If you haven't started yet... this post is for you.

Things to keep in mind:

-Are your pumpkins carved? Have you figured out a safe way to light them on Halloween night?

-Have you gone over trick-or-treating safety rules with your kids?

-Are your decorations out? If you decorate every year…consider designating a specific, and well-marked, box for all Halloween items.

-Have you checked out the local Fall Fairs and Festivals in your community? Fall is a great time be outside with your family and friends. We’ll be heading into the busy Holiday season before you know it. Get outside now while you still can!

-Make sure to schedule some apple picking and pumpkin-patch-visiting time. See note above on enjoying brisk Fall weather.

-Buy Halloween treats ahead of time so you’re not scrambling to get them ready. Just be sure you don’t start snacking early. Do you have the perfect bowl? I have one – just for Halloween, and it goes back into that well marked storage container the next morning.

And…the most important part:

Costume ideas for you
-The sock monster…safety pin odd mate-less socks to your clothes (just remember to match them back up after the party)
-Paparazzo…camera-hound vest, sunglasses, camera bag on your shoulder, camera around your neck and a rolled up fan mag in your back pocket: instant celebrity-chaser
If all else fails… think kitty ears with some strategically placed eyeliner whiskers

Costume ideas for the kids
-Lego: find a large box that your child can pull on and wear over their body (after you’ve cut holes for their head and their arms). Attach empty food containers (like margarine or dip tubs) with a glue gun to the front. Spray paint desired color (make sure to select paint that sticks to plastic)
-Bag of jellybeans: find a clear plastic bag and cut holes for legs and arms on the bottom and side seams. Have your child step in; fill with small blown up balloons. Tie bag at neck with a big ribbon

If all else fails, check out this silly site for true last-minute, and I mean last minute, ideas. Note...last minute does not always mean good, but I promise, many are fun!

Last but not least…
Have you thought about a costume for Fido? I’m just sayin’… he might want to be part of the fun, too. Plenty of websites have costumes for dogs, but I venture that local pet stores have a good selection, too! You know you want to!
